I cannot remember an age when I was not drawing. I grew up in Berkeley, California during the turbulent 1960's, but for me it was just home. I was taught by a very classically trained German art teacher in high school who encouraged me to make art my career. I attended art college in London, England during the 1970's when things were definitely not being classically taught. Eventually I ended up specializing in animation as it combined my love of drawing and film. In 1978 I moved to Los Angeles and got into the animation industry. Two years later I moved back home to the San Francisco Bay Area and have never left. I have worked on animated series, an animated feature and done special effects for Industrial Light and Magic. In 1988 I entered the video game industry, working at Atari Games. Surprisingly, games provided steadier employment than film and TV and allowed me to raise a family and buy a house in the suburbs. Fast forward thirty years and I find myself semi-retired and, after years of making my art digitally, I am enjoying the pleasure of using traditional art mediums again. The pencil is still a mighty and wonderful tool!
