Joann has been in the art field for many years. Studied with many famous artists that she admired. All which have contributed to the artist she is today. Lives in Kalispell, Mt. Paints en plein air and studio painting. "I love plein air painting, it is the best way to really see actual light and shadows, unlike painting from photographs". However she still uses photos, but the oil sketches and pencil sketches clarify what the photos lack. Joann volunteers at the Hockaday Museum in Kalispell as a docent. One of the activities she enjoys is working with children. The Hockaday has a program that invites schools to visit and view the art with a docent, then the class moves to the art workroom and does a project that relates to the exhibition. " I feel it is so important to include art in schools, and being a docent I can encourage young people to appreciate art, even if they are not interested in becoming artists. When explaining color, mass, light and shadow and how the artist leads the viewer into the painting, is amazing to see the students really become interested. Joann and her husband Robert, a photographer, have lived and traveled in many cities in Europe and Mexico. She has many sketch books filled with ideas and a unlimited amount of photographs to inspire her. You will find her painting late into the night and early morning hours.
