Google Acquires Jetpac App and its Instagram-Scanning Technology

Google is buying Jetpac, an app that analyzes Instagram data to recommend various types of destinations. Jetpac's app calls itself a visual guide to local recommendations for over 6,000 cities all around the world. Its technology scans visual cues like smiles, mustaches and lipstick to create lists like 'Bars Women Love' or 'Happiest Places' within a selected city. The app offers lists of popular spots in categories like restaurants, bars, coffee shops, outdoors, entertainment, sports and museums. In a statement on its Web site, Jetpac says it will be removing Jetpac's apps from the App Store in the coming days, and ending support for them on September 15. TheStreet's Brittany Umar has details from New York.
