Joseph Gordon-Levitt Talks Difficult Sandman Adaptation

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s adaptation of cult comic Sandman is currently in development at Warner Bros – and features many of the team who produced The Dark Knight trilogy.
The Looper actor, who will co-produce the film and is expected to star, is writing the script, along with creator Neil Gaiman and David S. Goyer.
He said (via MovieFone): “Right now we’re working on a script. It’s me and Goyer and the screenwriter [Jack Thorne] and Neil Gaiman, as well as the good folks at DC and Warner Bros. It’s a really cool team of people”
Goyer, who produced and co-wrote Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, is also developing Zack Snyder’s Justice League franchise.
There is still no confirmation if Sandman will exist in the same Man of Steel/Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice universe – although considering the success of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, that does seem likely. Also, there isn’t any word on if he’ll appear in Guillermo Del Toro’s Justice League Dark.
Following Gordon-Levitt’s impressive directorial debut Don Jon, there have been rumors that he is being lined up to helm the blockbuster.
But the reason the studio, and its star, are keeping their cards close to their chest -- the Inception actor has still not been officially confirmed as a cast member yet -- is that Sandman has an infamously complex premise.
Indeed, Gordon-Levitt hinted that the story -- which takes place both in the protagonist’s realm (dreaming) and the real world (waking world) -- is taking time to get right.
He said: "There’s not a script yet, we’re still kind of working it out because it’s such a complicated adaptation because….
“There’s a reason people have been trying and failing to adapt Sandman for the past 20 years.” One has to wonder why they don’t attempt a TV series, which may best suit Sandman.
