Constantine TV Series Could Crossover Into Guillermo Del Toro's Justice League Dark

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

Marvel has been building its cinematic universe since the first Iron Man hit screens back in 2008. DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. have been playing catch up with the first film in the DC Cinematic Universe, Man of Steel, being released in 2013… unless of course the rumors that Ben Affleck is taking up the Bruce Wayne incarnation vacated by Christian Bale are true, making The Dark Knight trilogy part of the universe. But those are shaky rumors, at best.

One thing we do know with a degree of certainty is that while Marvel’s TV series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (who just added Kyle MacLachlan as Skye’s father), Agent Carter, and Daredevil are part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC and Warner have decided that their movies and TV series, such as Arrow and The Flash will be separate (though Arrow and Flash share a TV universe). So it comes as an interesting development that Guillermo del Toro is open to using Matt Ryan, who will be playing the titular character Constantine in the upcoming NBC television show.

Justice League Dark or Dark Universe (as it’s sometimes called) has been a pet project of del Toro, using characters that were more at home under the Vertigo banner from DC Comics. Here’s what he told IGN about the latest news on the Dark Universe front:

I would love to have The Spectre in it, because he’s one of the most…Absolutely, beyond moral characters in this universe and he does crazy things…But, I’m happy with…They’re doing that with Constantine. What I made clear to them is that the TV series will not affect the movie and they said that’s okay. They said you can have independence. Now, if we see the TV series and we can mesh with it or cast the same actor depending on where the movie is going, I would be happy to consider that.

A few things first… del Toro confirmed to SuperHeroHype that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are planning on keeping The Sandman and Justice League Dark separate from each other and the DC Cinematic Universe:

Sandman doesn't figure in the Dark Universe. We have Deadman, we have the Demon, we have Swamp Thing, we have Zatana, we have Constantine, but DC and Warners have been very clear that they are trying to keep those properties separate, so when the time comes, they can unite them, once they know they're quantifiable. Batman, Superman, Green Lantern... everyone eventually will come together. Right now, they're allowing us independence.

This doesn’t mean that eventually all these properties will come together. David S. Goyer, who developed Constantine, also helped develop the story for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, so there is a possibility of tying them all together, along with the Constantine TV show down the line without too much hassle. For now, it’s best to consider them all separate.

We’ll have more news on GDT’s Justice League Dark; the man is busy, with Crimson Peak, an untitled black-and-white film, and Pacific Rim 2, along with maybe At The Mountains Of Madness and Hellboy 3.

Here’s a preview of Constantine, which debuts this fall on NBC:
