Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Will Set Sail In Summer 2017

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

Watching a Pirates of the Caribbean movie is a lot like being involved in a head-on collision with a bus – it’s big, loud, and will probably leave you with permanent brain damage.

After a raft of mega-budget duds, including Johnny Depp’s Lone Ranger, Disney has finally announced the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, aka Pirates 5.

The blockbuster sequel will be released on July 7, 2017, and will once again feature franchise lynchpin Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. While this may seem like a long way away, the 2017 competition is already looking pretty stiff, with Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot sequel and Universal’s Despicable Me 3 also vying for box office supremacy.

The previous Pirate films have involved some of the biggest budgets of all time – the third movie alone cost $300 million -- the fifth installment is reportedly aiming for a more conservative approach.

This is primarily because producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s The Lone Ranger, which crucially starred Depp, was a $250 million commercial face plant. Ironically, the film’s production was delayed to cut the budget down, but during filming, the budget ballooned back up. It caused Bruckheimer to lose final cut on Pirates 5, he and Disney to split after a long and successful partnership, and his signing with Paramount. Bruckheimer will still produce Pirates 5.

After much deliberation, the studio hired young directing duo Joachim RnningandEspen Sandberg. Their debut feature Kon-Tiki was a small art house film which included some impressive visuals, and was largely filmed on water.

Stay tuned for more Pirates of the Caribbean 5 news, including casting and story developments.
