Pre-Ordering Begins for Atomos Shogun 4K Recorder

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

What a difference a year can make. A year ago, Atomos executives weren’t sure the world was ready for 4K, and now they’ve has starting taking preorders for its Shogun Ultra High Definition external video recorder. The 4K recorder seems tailor-made for ultra high definition (UHD) mirrorless cameras, like the Panasonic GH4 and the Sony 7s, and promises to allow users to finally be able to record 4K at its highest resolution and color gamut. And Atomos is offering users who preorder a nifty extra gift.

"Shogun is the culmination of everything we stand for, amazing edit codec's from the sensor like 4K ProRes and RAW Cinema DNG. Affordable 4K recording through Raided HDD's and SSD's and unbelievable custom panels for monitoring," said Jeromy Young, CEO and Founder of Atomos. "Super light and slim and at a price point under 2K. We offer a faster more affordable camera to timeline workflow with revolutionary 4K cameras from Sony, Panasonic and Canon"-- Atomos Shogun NAB Press Release

As a quick reminder of the Shogun’s capabilities, this 4K recorder can write to CFast cards at either Apple ProRes 4K or CinemaDNG Raw over either HDMI, or 12G-SDI and can record 4K at 30p, and up to 120 fps for full HD. It comes with a gorgeous 7″ SuperAtom IPS monitor that offers 325 pixels per inch and has a 179 degree angle of view (nice for on-set viewing). It can also work at either 48, 50 or 60hz and offers 400 nit of brightness. Users also have access of waveform and other monitor tools including 3D Look Up tables that are either standard or user custom created. And users can remotely trigger and adjust the Shogun via Atomo’s iOS and Android apps. Nice feature. Other options include balanced XLR audio and LEMO breakout cables with phantom power. The

Another feature I like is that while on set, users can input XML meta data that includes favorite or reject flags for quick evaluation of footage in the edit bay and can be imported directly into either Adobe Premiere Pro CC or Final Cut Pro X. And you can also sync time codes thanks to Atomos proprietary time code protocol. Users have the choice between Record Run, Free Run, or Time-of-Day modes.

And until July 31st, anyone who preorders the Atomos Shogun, at a price of $1995, will also receive the Atomos Spyder color calibration tool ($150 value) in order to calibrate all Atomos monitors to the same color. That’s a key tool when you’re on set, that’s for sure.

You can preorder the Atomos Shogun here. Atomos will take your order information and then pass it on to the nearest reseller to arrange for deposit and qualify you for the Spyder bonus giveaway. More information on the Shogun can be found at Atomos’ website here.
