First Look at The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Plus Official Plot Details!

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

The San Diego Comic-Con is just around the corner and, as such, EW is putting out their Comic-Con preview issue, with our first look at Ultron from The Avengers: Age of Ultron. More than that, we finally get more of the plot spelled out to us and what Ultron’s ultimate goal is.

The thing about Ultron is that he is an artificial intelligence. So his robotic body can be destroyed, and he can operate legions of drones, which seems to be the case on this cover (and apparently Tony Stark’s idea, following the Iron Legion in Iron Man 3). That also means this may not be his final form in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Here’s the cover image as well as Entertainment Weekly’s explanation of the plot.

For better or worse (trust us, it's worse), his Tony Stark has devised a plan that won't require him to put on the Iron Man suit anymore, and should allow Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the Hulk to get some much needed R&R as well. His solution is Ultron, self-aware, self-teaching, artificial intelligence designed to help assess threats, and direct Stark's Iron Legion of drones to battle evildoers instead.

The only problem? Ultron (played by James Spader through performance-capture technology) lacks the human touch, and his superior intellect quickly determines that life on Earth would go a lot smoother if he just got rid of Public Enemy No. 1: Human beings. "Ultron sees the big picture and he goes, 'Okay, we need radical change, which will be violent and appalling, in order to make everything better'; he's not just going 'Muhaha, soon I'll rule!'" Whedon says, rubbing his hands together.

"He's on a mission," the filmmaker adds, and smiles thinly. "He wants to save us."

Many of these plot details were pretty much guessed when the first teaser was shown, announcing The Avengers: Age of Ultron back at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where it appeared that Iron Man’s suit was rebuilt into the titular Ultron.

In the comics, it was Hank Pym (the original Ant-Man) who built Ultron, but I’m not up in arms over that change.

What seems to be confirmed is that the artificial intelligence developed by HYDRA in Captain America: The Winter Soldier doesn’t seem to play a factor here. I’ve been speculating it would have something to do with Ultron, but it looks like Tony Stark is more directly responsible.

The other question this raises is, who could the Avengers possibly be fighting that would wear them out? The obvious answer is Baron Von Strucker, seen in a post-credits scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and his “miracle” twins Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. We know that the both of them start off on the side of the bad guys, only to switch over later. I still wonder what Von Strucker wants — but I guess we’ll all find out soon enough.

Director Joss Whedon said back in 2012 he’d want the Avengers sequel to be darker, and it appears we’ll be getting it.
