A Geek's Reaction to Big Hero 6 Trailer

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

Very recently, we got a bunch of character posters for Big Hero 6, as well as an announcement for the full voice cast. Disney continues to trot out more Big Hero 6 goodies, and the new trailer for the film has been released, giving us a better look at San Fransokyo.

The official plot synopsis for the film and trailer are located below, as well as my usual geeky analysis.

With all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, "Big Hero 6" is an action-packed comedy-adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his geniusthanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tamago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companiona robot named Baymaxand transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action, "Big Hero 6" is directed by Don Hall ("Winnie the Pooh") and Chris Williams ("Bolt"), and produced by Roy Conli ("Tangled").

Ok, confession time, Wreck-It-Ralph made me cry while on a five hour flight across the country — most CGI films have a tendency to get me. I’m sure my seat mate was probably a bit uncomfortable, while I tried to hide my tears. As blasphemous as this may be to say, I found Frozen dull and boring, and I really don’t see what the big fuss is about — I assume I’m just not the target audience for it.

Big Hero 6, on the other hand is based on a Marvel property, and seems to feature some of the same themes and ideas as my favorite Pixar film The Incredibles. Baymax is already the breakout character of this film, and we’ve barely seen any of the other characters.

Which brings up another interesting point.

While we do get to see a few shots of the rest of the characters, this trailer still focuses on the relationship between Baymax and the protagonist, Hiro. We also get our first look at the villain who wears a kabuki mask.

While I’m very much looking forward to Big Hero 6, I still can’t help wonder why it’s based on a Marvel comic book at all. Very few elements of the comic have translated to the feature film from the comic, and no mention that it’s even based on a Marvel property are anywhere to be seen in the trailer.

My best guess is that since Disney encouraged its people to explore Marvel’s catalogue for ideas when Marvel was first acquired, this is just an after effect of that. Remember, no one had any idea how huge the Marvel Cinematic Universe was going to be back in 2008 when Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk debuted.

Big Hero 6 premieres November 7, 2014.
