Doctor Who Official Trailer Hints A Darker Side

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

“Clara, tell me, am I a good man?” That’s the question that Peter Capaldi asks of his companion after his sudden regeneration from the Happy go lucky 11th Doctor to a 12th Doctor (or is it 13th) who seems haunted by his past. And Clara’s honest answer … well, see for yourself as the official trailer for the 8th Season of Doctor Who has premiered online, and it hints that our favorite Time Lord is going to have a tough go of it on the darker side.

I don’t think I know who the Doctor is anymore … – Clara

The 8th season of the 50-year-old British Science Fiction drama has been a very busy one for Capaldi. From his live network reveal, to his brief cameo in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, and his transformation in Matt Smith’s Christmas swan song, and then to almost immediately filming his own freshman season as the Time Lord in search of his home planet of Gallifrey.

And from what we’ve heard, it’s going to be a more serious, darkened toned. If you look above, series showrunner Steven Moffat warns that, with a new doctor, comes a new era. And that first trailer shows that the Doctor’s old enemies are back, including a familiar voice. It sounds like Davros, the creator of the Daleks is back, and there are hints that the Cybermen and even a resurrected (and recast) Master may go up against the Doctor again. Then there’s the Dinosaurs at Parliament, and Danny Pink joins the cast as another companion in the TARDIS.

A brand-new era of Doctor Who begins as the Time Lord dons a new look. Peter Capaldi said of his Doctor:"He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord." While lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added: "New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over -- Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!" The upcoming season also stars Jenna Coleman (Death Comes to Pemberley) as companion Clara. – BBC

And while filming is wrapping up in preparation for an epic 12 day world tour by Capaldi, Coleman and Moffat, which sadly doesn’t include a stop for the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the Doctor is also having a tough go of it off the set… There was a recent leaks of the first five scripts, and now word that the first two unfinished episodes have also been leaked online by some nefarious bad boy in the ancillary supply chain. And it’s one of the things I hate about the internet… that some just can’t help but ruin the party by leaking it.

But I’m also not sure this isn’t a carefully choreographed PR stunt either. Not everyone is going to go look and find the scripts or even the two videos, which as of this morning are still on the pirate sites for people to download. Most fans will ignore it, because … well, as River Song would say … SPOILERS. But most, like me, will also talk about it. And that controversy will take Doctor Who well into the fall, as it hits its August 23rd premiere.

And you know what? I can’t wait.
