Chris Columbus Producing Goonies and Gremlins Sequels?

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

The 80′s was a strange time for films. After the auteur movement of the 70′s started to peter out it was replaced with films that had an almost naive sense of wonder and innocence. Two films that came out of that era were The Goonies and Gremlins, both of which were written by Chris Columbus.

Now, I love the auteur movement that produced directors like Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Altman, and Woody Allen ,but I didn’t really discover them until I grew up — and I was a kid in the 80′s so these films have a special place in my heart.

While we’ve heard rumblings that the Goonies would be getting a sequel, Tracking Board is reporting that original series writer Chris Columbus (who also directed the first two Harry Potter movies) will be on board to produce Goonies 2, as well as a sequel for Gremlins. The Gremlins sequel is sort of a reboot, that takes place in the same universe but will probably center around a brand new character — how long to Mogwais live, anyway?

Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg have been attached to the project as producers for a little more than a year, and Steven Spielberg is expected to return as the executive producer. The original director, Joe Dante, seems unlikely to step back into the director’s chair, and while Zach Galligan would love to be a part of the third film, no casting has been announced.

The Goonies sequel seems to want to bring everyone involved with the first one back together, including original director Richard Donner. There’s no word on whether Donner will be directing the film or if Columbus will be writing it but all of the surviving cast is likely to return.

There’s been a certain movement in recent years to soft-reboot films with the original characters’ children in the lead role. Tron: Legacy did it that way, and even recently, the Disney channel has done that with Girl Meets World. Heck, rumors point to Star Wars: Episode VII focusing heavily on Han Solo and Princess Leia’s kids.

Both the Goonies and Gremlins could go that way as well since enough time has passed for the main characters to have children, but I find that Gremlins is less likely to go that route. There’s a sort of hubris about playing lax with the rules with caring for a Mogwai, and I doubt Billy’s child would be allowed to break any of those rules, having gone through two separate Gremlin attacks. The Goonies sequel? That could easily involve the kids of the characters.

Like Ghostbusters 3, I’m not counting on these films being made. They’re huge parts of my childhood, and while some part of me wants to explore what happens next, another part is worried we’ll get another Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Should Hollywood go ahead and revisit these properties? Let us know in the comments below!

Fun fact, by the way… Did you know the original poster of The Gremlins featured a hidden E.T. Easter Egg?
