A Geek's Reaction to 17 Minutes of Guardians of the Galaxy and More!

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

I was lucky enough to see 17 minutes of Guardians of the Galaxy in IMAX 3D, and if I wasn’t looking forward to this movie already, this preview would have sold me several times over. There’s a part right in the beginning where Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) describes the orb he’s stolen as having a weird ark of the covenant vibe, which is an obvious reference to Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Director James Gunn is a product of those 80′s movie,s and you can feel it in every part of this preview.

What follows is a description of what I saw, spoilers warning!

The sequence shown from Guardians of the Galaxy was of the prison breakout. It starts off with John C. Reilly’s narration of the line-up of criminals, excluding Drax the Destroyer. It’s longer than it was in the trailer but still gives you the lowdown on the characters.

Peter Quill, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot are all on their way to being processed, when Quill sees an alien guard listening to his walkman and he’s having none of it. At this point, Quill gets shocked continuously and the song “Hooked on a Feeling” starts playing. Then he’s given an orange goo shower and so is Rocket. Quill sees some technology embedded in Rocket’s back hinting at the torture he went through as a genetic experiment.

When the characters enter the prison, Gamora gets shouted at quite a bit, as she has a reputation. A blue alien tries to make Quill well, um, his bitch but Groot is having none of that and he puts two twiggy fingers up the alien’s nose and lifts him up off the ground. Rocket declares that anyone who wants Quill will have to go through them.

Afterwards, Rocket tells Gamora, Quill and Groot that he has a plan to break out of prison and needs each of them to play a specific part. Unfortunately, Groot being the helpful tree that he is, ends up being too helpful and forces the team to enact their escape prematurely.

The escape itself is thrilling, hilarious, and just plain fun. It reminded me of the humor and action of the original Iron Man and this could be the best Marvel film since The Avengers, it was just that good. Each character comes alive instantly and Rocket and Groot will steal the show in this film.

After the prison escape preview, we were treated to an extended trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy which filled in a few more details. You can watch that here, thanks to Fandango:

Still not enough Guardians of the Galaxy for you? Well, Marvel has also released a ton of new stills from the film as well which you can check out in the gallery below.

Update! James Gunn took to Twitter to announce he’s wrapped the film, with 3 weeks until it opens! He more than likely was putting the finishing touches on any bonus, post-credit scenes, also known as buttons. Probably to tease The Avengers: Age of Ultron!

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1, 2014.
