GoPro Mod Kit Brings Affordable Interchangeable Lenses

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

We’ve seen modifications of the GoPro Hero before that would allow users to employ lenses or add anamorphic style, but they’ve been largely either for rent-only, or are very expensive. However, there is a company in China is making a mod kit that, for just over $100, will give you the capability to bring any lens to the action cam party.

The Fat Cat Ultimate MOD Interchangeable Lens System Kit BACKBONE for GoPro Hero3+/3 w/ C/CS Lens Mount?mod kit comes with a series of add on parts:

  • 1 x Front Panel
  • 1 x Middle Panel
  • 1 x Tripod Mount Adapter
  • 1 x C/CS Mount Adapter
  • 1 x C/CS Mount Extension Ring
  • 1 x Lens Flange
  • 1 x CCD Extension FPC
  • 15 x Fixed Screws
  • 1 x Hand Strap (130cm)
  • 1 x CCD Fixed Pad

The heart of which is a C-mount screw-on lens adapter and mount extension rings. This will allow you to modify the GoPro to accept just about any lens with additional adapters. I especially like the adapter you can get which allows you to adapt a giant Canon EF 100-400 zoom. Of course, you’re not going to be using that while scooting down the ski slopes on your snowboard, and doing a YOLO flip, but to be able add that kind of lens capability on a locked down GoPro for a tough shot, that’s always a good thing to be able pull out of your quiver. That, and GoPro’s new 3D housing, and you’re really sporting capability!

The kit comes in black, white, and multi-colored varieties, as well, so you can blend your mod in based on what version of the Hero 3 or 3+ you have. DX.Com is selling it for about $120 plus free shipping to the US from China. And if you buy three or more kits, you can get a slight discount of about $3.00 each. Not much, I’ll grant you, but if you’re like me and you have a set of three or four GoPros you want to outfit, every dollar saved is a good thing, and that’s almost a $10 savings to buy them all at once.
