Trailer: St. Vincent Starring Bill Murray

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

Pairing comedy queen Melissa McCarthy with screen icon Bill Murray may seem like a no brainier. But judging by the trailer for St. Vincent, it could turn out to be a stroke of genius.

Written and directed by Theodore Melfi, who is making his feature film debut, the comedy drama has all the hallmarks of an awards contender.

The story centres on ageing degenerate, Vincent, played by Murray, whose gains a new purpose and perspective on life when a single mother, McCarthy, and her young son move in next door.

Of course it’s easy to get carried away when the film, which is being distributed by The Weinstein Company, hasn’t even been released yet. However the preview reminds me of the work of James L. Brooks, specifically Best Picture winners Terms of Endearment and As Good As It Gets, where huge doses of sentimentally were overshadowed by fantastic writing and central performances.

Also Murray, who has only been nominated for an Oscar once, infamously lost out to Sean Penn in the Best Actor category in 2004, for his performance in Sofia Coppola’s Lost In Translation.

Bridesmaids star McCarthy appears to be playing it straighter than usual to help complement Murray’s outlandish misanthrope.

The actress has been one of Hollywood’s most consistent performers in recent years having scored hits with Identity Thief and The Heat, which grossed $173-million and $229-million respectively.

And as if the one-two punch of having Murray and McCarthy paired together wasn’t enough to floor audiences, Naomi Watts is cast as a pregnant stripper.

St.Vincent will hit screens in October, 2014.
