Official: Pacific Rim 2 In April 2017; Animated Series Coming Soon!

By Heath McKnight

I’m not going to lie, I’m a HUGE Pacific Rim fan! Better than Godzilla (yes, I was excited for it), and our own Danny F. Santos loves it, too. We’ve been tracking Pacific Rim 2 news for a while, but the first Pacific Rim only made $101 million in North America, but a strong showing in China led to over $411 million worldwide.

Director Guillermo Del Toro recently spoke about writing the script with Zak Penn (The Avengers), from a story by Travis Beacham (who is off doing TV), and now our friends at Legendary has greenlit the sequel for April 7, 2017, and interestingly enough, Universal (who has a deal with Legendary) takes over releasing the film from Warner Bros. along with an animated series which will be based on the excellent Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero graphic novel.

I first saw the news on Legendary’s Instagram, with Del Toro making an announcement from the edit suite of his gothic horror film, Crimson Peak (2015). Here’s GDT:

The official word from Legendary:

Guillermo del Toro returns to direct Legendary Pictures' PACIFIC RIM 2, the next chapter of the epic action-adventure he created with 2013's hit original film. Zak Penn will write the script with del Toro. Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni once again produce alongside del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene. Jillian Share will executive produce. Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D and IMAX 3D.

We’ll have more news on Pacific Rim 2 and the animated series soon! We have more Jaegers and Kaiju on the way; I hope the cast returns, too!
