Shane Black's Predator Film Will Be A Sequel, Not A Reboot

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

The 20th Century Fox Predator films are being revived with Shane Black just recently announced to direct the reboot. Black is a fine choice to work on the material, having worked on the first film’s screenplay (uncredited), as well as playing the character Hawkins.

Black recently wrote and directed Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (which was amazing) and Iron Man 3 (which was a bit of a let down) so he’s no slouch behind the camera. However, reports that it is a reboot have been highly exaggerated.

Black and screenwriter Fred Dekker (Monster Squad) are looking to bring it back as an ‘inventive sequel,’ instead of reinventing the wheel. At a time where everything is being rebooted, sometimes with horrible results, it’s always exciting to see filmmakers going back to the well, to mine what’s already there. As for why they’re going with the inventive sequel, Black explained:

Why start over, when you've all this rich mythology yet to mine? [I like] the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.

The man of the hour… er, creature of the hour.

What this doesn’t tell us is what he means by an ‘inventive sequel.’ I’m going to assume that he’s discounting the Alien vs. Predator series, leaving Predator, Predator 2, and Predators as the back story. If it’s set on Earth, then he can ignore the events of Predators, unless he brings back the characters of Royce and Isabelle — meaning there’s actually very little backstory about the predator species other than they hunt and have a moral code about it.

Again, I’m leaving out the material from Alien vs. Predator.

Because most of the plot is being kept under wraps for now, I can only speculate where Black would want to take it. I’m positive that the ritual hunt will be a big part of this sequel (as that’s the fun in the Predator films), but there will be a twist in it.

With Predator 2, there was a little bit of a cliffhanger, in that it was suspected the Predators would return to Earth in the future — so if I were to pitch an idea, it would be something like this: Bring back Arnold Schwarzenegger and/or Danny Glover from the first two films who have a mercenary team to hunt down any Predators who show up on our home turf, and have both groups trying to find a way to outsmart each other.

What would you like to see in a sequel? Let us know below!

No release date has been set, as Black is working on a Doc Savage film, and rumor has it he wants Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth.

Stay tuned for more Predator news!
