With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opening May 2016, and a Justice League film in the pipeline as well people are curious what else DC Comics and Warner Bros. has in store for us in the future. What we do know is that Warner Bros. is planning nine films in the near future, including Batman v Superman, but what movies those could be are but myths and rumors.
Now Latino Review is reporting that we can expect a Batman film in 2019 starring Ben Affleck with a working title of The Batman. The way Latino Review’s source breaks it down, it seems very plausible that this will be the way to go.
Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, which is currently in production, should wrap up in December. After a short break, Justice League starts shooting winter, as the rumors have it, in 2015. This gives Affleck time to direct and star in his follow up to Argo, called Live By Night, which hits theaters in October 2016. Afterwards, he’s free to move onto a Batman film, which would start production in 2017 or 2018.
The big question, besides whether the rumor is true or not, is whether Affleck will also take up directorial duties on The Batman. Up to this point, everything Affleck has directed and starred in has not been a massive logistical piece, like superhero movies tend to be. Having said that, Batman does have the ability to go much smaller than most superhero movies, because he doesn’t have any superpowers.
Digging up another rumor, you can see how releasing a Batman movie in 2019 makes absolute sense. Earlier, we reported the following schedule which was corroborated by Kevin Smith on the Hollywood Babble-On podcast. Here’s the rumored schedule:
It looks like Warner Bros. is putting their tentpole stars of Batman and Superman in May of each year. I would suspect we’d get a Batman standalone in May 2019 going by this list, which would also place 7 years between The Dark Knight Rises and the Affleck standalone film. This not only gets us used to Affleck as Batman in both Batman v Superman and Justice League, but also puts a decent amount of time between his film and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.
One thing to consider… Marvel Studios has staked out many early May release dates for their films, starting in 2008 with Iron Man, up to Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015 and, for now, Captain America 3 in 2016. Should be interesting.
But isThe Batman one of the nine films The Wall Street Journal reported that Warner Bros. is working on? There’s still two films to be announced for July 2018 and Christmas 2018, which would bring us to 9 films. Also, and I know it’s really early to be asking this, when would Warner Bros. like to release Justice League 2? With all the information we have, or think we have, I would bet that we’d get that in May of 2020. DC is definitely playing catch up with Marvel Studios, but damn if they’re not being ambitious!
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will be released May 6, 2016.
