A Geek's Reaction To The Expendables 3 Trailer

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

Aw yeah! The boys are back!

The Expendables is big and dumb and designed to maximize one thing: nostalgia for old action films– and that’s not a bad thing. Sylvester Stallone brings back some veterans of the series as well as brand new recruits in what promises to be the last one.

(Hint: they’re working on the next one already, this won’t be the last one.)

Check out the new full length trailer:

Wesley Snipes is back in action after serving his 3 years for tax evasion and it looks like that’s going to be a tongue in cheek reference as the Expendables break his character out of jail. In fact, these films like to be a bit meta with their references– in Expendables 2 Arnold Schwarzenegger says “I’ll be back” for example.

The prison breakout isn’t the only reference in this trailer, when Harrison Ford walks up to Schwarzenegger he says, “This is it? This is your team?” Schwarzenegger replies with, “Short notice” which Ford retorts, “Yeah, very short.” This seems like a stab at Bruce Willis who was fired after asking for $4 million for 4 days of work. He’s been replaced with Ford on short notice. Or it could be reference to the fact that Jet Li is pretty short…

Mel Gibson is also here and I think he’s starting to relish playing villains. He played the bad guy in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills, and now he plays one of the co-founders of the Expendables who turned to evil. Now he wants revenge on the Expendables.

Here’s the synopsis:

Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill... or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables' most personal battle yet.

Really, the plot doesn’t matter. That’s not why you want to watch this — you just want to see Stallone and his crew of merry men blow stuff up and shoot guns. Action films in the 80′s were over the top and just completely crazy, which is what these films are trying to recapture.

The Expendables 3 hits theaters August 15, 2014.
