Marvel Is Still Considering A New Hulk Movie

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

If there’s one character that Marvel has had a hard time pinning down, it’s The Incredible Hulk. Both Eric Bana and Edward Norton tried to take a shot at bringing the massive green superhero to the screen, and both films left a lot to be desired.

While I think overall The Incredible Hulk was a better movie than Ang Lee’s Hulk, I thought Bana made a better Bruce Banner. Well, that was until Mark Ruffalo’s performance in the Avengers film showed us what the Hulk could be.

Ruffalo was the breakout performance in Avengers, and Bruce Banner is a tough character to translate onto the screen, because he’s supposed to be an introvert. Ruffalo gave us a character who was able to be quiet but without being aloof, his character accepted who he was and it looks like it’s inspired Marvel to try another Hulk film. Here’s what Ruffalo has to say to Digital Spy on the topic of another standalone film:

I think they are, for the first time, entertaining the idea of it. When we did THE AVENGERS it was basically ‘No!’, and now there is some consideration for it. But there’s still nothing definitive, not even a skeletal version of what it would be. I look forward to going down that road, if we could crack that nut.

As long as we can finally have a Hulk movie where Banner has accepted the other guy as just a part of his life, I think Marvel could make an awesome film. While what Ain’t It Cool has heard and what a majority of comic book readers would love to see is a Planet Hulk film, I’m not so sure that’s on the docket. Last year, Marvel Exec Kevin Feige spoke about the possibility of a Hulk movie to Entertainment Weekly last year:

What we're excited about exploring and expanding is Mark and Banner's not in Planet Hulk at all. The fun of the Hulk is his interaction with humans.

If Marvel does go ahead with Planet Hulk film, it would be very different than in the comics — or they can use elements of Planet Hulk, and craft a very different story. There’s no reason why it can’t be Bruce Banner who’s sent out into space and meets aliens to get along with, and/or fight. In the Avengers, Banner can assume the form of the Hulk when he wants.

As for human interaction is concerned, Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy is the only human in the upcoming film, so it’s not out of the question to have Banner interact with aliens. Speaking of which, having Drax as part of a Planet Hulk film would work out brilliantly, even though he’s not in the comic books.

Until then, the next time you get a chance to see Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk will be in Avengers: Age of Ultron, premiering May 1, 2015.
