True Detective Creator Nic Pizzolato Says Show Will Likely End After Season 3

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

With the second season of True Detective currently in development, creator Nic Pizzolato has revealed that he doesn’t envisage the HBO show running for more than 3 seasons.

While talking to Banff World Media Festival (via The AV Club), the series writer explained the burden of living up to the incredibly high standard he has set for himself.

He said: “I can’t imagine I would do this more than three years. I mean, I'd like to have a regular TV show. We'll have some fixed sets, regular actors and I could bring in people to help and I don' t have to be there every second. It'd be great.”

He added: “It can't have any growing pains like a regular first season. If it works it has to work right out of the box. That's incredibly exhausting. I mean, the job is exhausting to begin with, but it's doubly exhausting and I'm writing every episode.”

Of course, what Pizzolato is doing is extremely rare in modern television, creating and writing a show by himself. Usually the task of writing a hit show is shared amongst a team of writers, who either work as a group (which is common in U.S. sitcoms) or who take turns on writing individual episodes.

But is Pizzolato capable of trusting others with True Detective  Maybe not, although he did hint that he would be willing to do so on future projects.

There have been a lot of rumors surrounding the second series of True Detective, so first let’s look at the facts: stars Woody Harrelson and ?Matthew McConaughey will not reprise their roles in the follow-up season, which will center on three new detectives.

That’s what we know for sure. However, amongst the fervent speculation one name which keeps popping up is Brad Pitt, who is now the hot favorite to take one of the three lead roles.

One rumor which has since been refuted is that Jessica Chastain was approached about taking one of the other positions. And while it looks almost certain the Oscar nominee will not be appearing alongside her Tree of Life co-star Pitt, the speculation does suggest that the second series will feature a female detective and that Pizzolato is targeting actresses of the highest possible calibre.

Stay tuned for more True Detective developments.
