Sigourney Weaver to Return in Avatar Sequel Trilogy

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

It’s been nearly five years and counting since Avatar smashed all global box office records. Work on the new set of sequels has been slow by most standards but James Cameron has never been one to rush sequels. There was a seven year gap between The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, so I think we’re par for the course.

There’s also the fact that the two sequels were expanded to three and they’ll be shot back-to-back (-to-back).

Casting wise, we’ve known that Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang are all set to return to Pandora but now Cameron has revealed that Sigourney Weaver is officially set to return as well. Here’s what he said:

Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together,so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels.

Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We're both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.

Most likely she’ll be playing a computer generated character, like she did with Grace Augustine’s avatar, which means we’ll be getting Weaver doing 100% motion capture this time around.

One of the great things about science-fiction is that even when a character dies, they’re only dead until they come back (see Star Trek III: The Search for Spock for further details); same thing with comic books (everyone from Superman to Tony Stark has died and returned over the decades). Doesn’t sound like that’s what Cameron has planned, however, and has decided to cast Weaver in a new role entirely. Or so it would seem.

Here’s the thing, just before her character died, she said something to the effect of “I'm with her [Na'vi god Eywa] Jake, she's real.” Is it possible that Weaver will be playing a new character whose essence is based on Augustine? Could Eywa reveal herself to Jake and co. in the form of Augustine? I wouldn’t rule any of that out, and I’m curious to see what kind of story Cameron has cooked up that requires 3 films to tell.

The still untitled Avatar sequels will be released December 2016, December 2017 ,and concluding the sequel trilogy December 2018.
