After nearly 20 years, Dumb and Dumber To is nearly upon us. Indeed, the sequel to one of the best loved comedies of all time, starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, nearly didn’t happen.
But thanks to production company Red Granite, studio Universal, and a reportedly great script co-written by directors the Farrelly brothers, the movie will hit screens in November. Here’s the first trailer via Jimmy Fallon:
The trailer starts off with a typically ridiculous scene where Carrey’s Lloyd Christmas has been pretending to be insane for two decades, simply for a prank.
And along with the usual slapstick humor and pratfalls, the story is also very similar to the first movie, but then fans wouldn’t want it any other way.
The basic plot is that Daniels’ Harry Dunn finds out he has a daughter – who Lloyd instantly becomes infatuated with after viewing a photo – and the duo set out on a road trip to find her.
Without being overly critical of the preview, it’s safe to say that the jury is still firmly out on Dumb and Dumber To.
Much has been made of Carrey’s recent poor run at the box-office, but an important factor in Warner Bros. dropping the project was filmmakers Peter and Bobby Farrelly themselves.
In fact since the original film, the directing team seemed to blow their comedy load, first with Kingpin (1996), and then with the iconic There’s Something About Mary (1998), and haven’t even come marginally close to emulating their earlier successes since.
However, there is a considerably large fan base who have waited a long time for this project, something which will undoubtedly help commercially.
Dumb and Dumber To will be released on November 14th, 2014.
