Trailer Sharknado 2: The Second One

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

It’s hard to gauge Sharknado’s impact upon the world of television just yet. Indeed the movie, which involved man eating sharks raining down upon Los Angeles via a tornado, seemed to make more of a viral impact than it did on ratings. Midnight screenings at movie theatres don’t hurt, of course.

The real barometer of success will be the sequel, Sharknado 2: The Second One, which is due to air July 30th. While the new trailer may be short, it shows that the producers know not to mess with a winning formula, taking all the elements from the first movie and moving them to New York. Here’s the teaser trailer:

Of course silly movies have been around for a long time, including genuine classics such as Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979) and Airplane (1980).

But while both those films included terrific writing and were out-and-out comedies, Sharknado hinges on one big tongue-in-cheek premise, which basically involves straight actors, including?Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, running around taking life incredibly seriously while ridiculous things happen.

Can director Anthony C. Ferrante keep this rather wafer-thin novelty going for more than one film? Well the SyFy channel seem to think so, as they are planning on making Sharknado an annual event, with Sharknado 3 in development. One thing to keep in mind is that SyFy has cheesy monster movies that air frequently on the cable channel; it’s just that Sharknado made a lot of noise on Twitter, which in turn affected ratings, to a degree.
