Marvel's Doctor Strange Movie Gets Its Director

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

With only Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers: Age of Ultron left to premiere, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s phase 2 is about to come to a close. Phase three kicks off with Ant-Man and Captain America 3 but what other films that will be released between Avengers 2 and 3 are being kept under wraps by Marvel.

One of the oft rumored films in development is Doctor Strange?– and it looks like it has landed it’s director in Scott Derrickson. While Marvel has no comment, Derrickson has tweeted the following:

Looks pretty definitive to me.

Derrickson is known for The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, and The Day the Earth Stood Still remake. That background makes him an awesome choice to bring the sorcerer supreme to the big screen. Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange is an arrogant nuerosurgeon who survives a car accident but damages his hands, effectively ending his career. He searches across the world looking for a way to restore the use of his hands which includes seeing doctors, homeopathy and, yes, the mystical arts. Eventually he comes across the Ancient one in the himalayas who instead of fixing his hands, gives him a new job: Doctor Strange becomes a master of the mystical arts and protects our reality from supernatural threats.

Marvel films excel when they try to mix genres like Captain America: The Winter Soldier did by fusing the superhero genre with 70′s political thrillers. Doctor Strange would be a darker film, and while not a horror movie, Derrickson can bring that darkness to it. As to who will play the sorcerer supreme, rumors are that Marvel is looking for either someone in their 20 to 30′s or someone who’s already reached middle age. Names being thrown around are Johnny Depp, Mads Mikkelsen (once attached as the villain in Thor 2), Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Jarod Leto. If that’s the short list, Mads Mikkelsen or Johnny Depp would be my top picks.

My best guess is expect Doctor Strange to premiere sometime in 2016 or 2017.
