Sigourney Weaver Talks Alien 5

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

There is a distinct possibility that in 100 years time, many of Hollywood’s existing blockbuster franchises will still be rolling on.

One of those may well be Alien, which so far has spanned 6 films, including two forgettable spin-offs, Alien vs Predator, and a quasi-prequel, Prometheus, directed by original franchise helmer Ridley Scott.

But could there be another installment of the main franchise, aka Alien 5. Well star Sigourney Weaver, who played series linchpin Ellen Ripley, seems to think so.

She said (via Collider): “Had we done a fifth one, I don’t doubt that her humanity would have prevailed. There’s more story to tell.

“I feel there’s a longing in certain groups of fans when I meet them for the story to be finished because we really left it up in the air, and I feel a bit badly about that because I was part of that decision-making process.

“I didn’t want to make four and five in a bundle. I think it’s hard to make these films all in a big lump. You need time to sort of let things resonate so I can imagine a situation where we could at least finish telling her story.”

What is most surprising is Weaver’s admission that there is more of a story to tell, considering her character (SPOILERS) was killed off in the underrated third film, which was directed by David Fincher (Fight Club), and then resurrected, via cloning, by filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie) in the disastrous fourth installment.

While Fincher has since admitted that he regrets killing off such a legendary character, arguably the definitive female hero in modern cinema, the fact is he did – she died. And that should have been the end of it.

British director Scott is already developing a sequel to Prometheus, which grossed $403 million worldwide. If that is commercially successful, then Alien 5 could well happen.
