Writer Steven Knight Developing World War Z Sequel Script

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

Despite a troubled production, zombie blockbuster World War Z grossed an impressive $540 million at the box office, making a sequel a dead certainty.

However, because director Marc Forster fell out with producer and star Brad Pitt during filming of the first installment, Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible), has been hired to helm the follow-up.

Interestingly, Variety has reported that one of the best writers in Hollywood, Steven Knight (Eastern Promises), is now developing the script, from Max Brook’s original source material.

Knight’s directorial debut Locke, starring Tom Hardy, has recently been released, and is one of the most beautifully written films I have seen this year.

The sequel, which will once again star A-lister Pitt, will follow the events of the first film, where an aggressive zombie epidemic has turned planet Earth upside down.

Director Bayona will reportedly film another movie giving Knight plenty of time to write the script. Indeed Pitt and production company Plan B Entertainment have evidently learned from their mistakes from the first time around, where the final third was rewritten and subsequently reshot after production had wrapped.

While the Foster’s adaptation performed well commercially, and was overall received well by critics, many fans of author Brooks’ epic book series were left disgruntled with perceived deviations away from the source material.

It will be interesting to see what Knight does with the extensive subject matter. Stay tuned for more World War Z sequel news.
