Kevin Smith Talks Batman V Superman & Justice League Universe

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

Considering Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck started their careers together, it is now a happy coincidence that the former hosts one of the internet’s most popular film podcasts and the latter is now playing Batman.

As a result, Smith has some amazing insight into the much-hyped and fairly controversial Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

First, his buddy Affleck showed him the new Bat suit on his iPhone last year, and now the Dogma director has clarified something, on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast (via?Comic Book), that we already suspected; that Zach Snyder’s movie will lead into more Justice League films.

Ben Affleck as Batman

Smith, who is a DC Comic expert and once wrote a Superman script for Warner Bros. in the 1990s, also criticized the rather lengthy title.

He said: “It's a bit of a mouthful. And also, I don't know why?Batman v Superman. Why not just throw the "s" in there? Or spell it or something like that."

He added: "But look, they're obviously beginning something, and there's a stretch of these flick, and so this is the beginning of the Justice League, as we all suspected as they were announcing that cast. We were like, 'This is the beginning of a Justice League movie.' From what I understand now, it's no longer like, 'This is Superman 2.'.

“The next one is not like a sequel to one of the characters. They're just going to keep building their universe for about five or six movies. But all of them...it's supposed to tell one massive story, which is all Justice League oriented."

The expanded cinematic universe which Smith is talking about of course depends on the success of Snyder’s film, which will feature Henry Cavill’s Superman alongside Affleck as Batman.

Although with the amount of money the studio is throwing at the movie, along with the publicity it has already garnered at this early stage of production, the project will have a huge amount of momentum going into its 2016 opening and a big hit seems likely.

Aside from a Justice League movie, another sequel which is currently being developed will centre around Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, who will be introduced in the new film.

There is no disguising the fact that not everyone was convinced with Man of Steel (2013), which compared to Marvel’s The Avengers (2012) was distinctly humorless, and fairly forgettable.

While the studio desperately wants to re-create the critical and commercial success of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, their first mistake could have been hiring Snyder after the British director declined the chance to helm. Handing Snyder, who is a divisive figure in Hollywood, the opportunity to a take on one of the biggest projects in motion picture history was risky to say the least.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will hit screens on May 6th, 2016, for now going against Captain America 3.
