What to Look Forward to in X-Men: Apocalypse

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

The grand-daddy of all modern superhero movies was back this past weekend in fine form! X-Men, along with Blade, pioneered how to make superheroes seem believable in this day and age. So what's next for this 14 year-old series of movies? In a word…

Apocalypse!

If you know your X-Men stories then that one word should make you excited! Before I continue, it should be said there are spoilers and possible spoilers for both X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse.

Who's in it?

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult and Jennifer Lawrence?who were cast in X-Men: First Class are all back to reprise their roles as Professor X, Magneto, Beast and Mystique. Also back from Days of Future Past are Hugh Jackman and Evan Peters playing Wolverine and Quicksilver.

Jackman has already speculated that the third Wolverine movie will be his last appearance so we can at least expect two more performances as Logan before he calls it quits. The producers have already said Quicksilver will have a larger role in the next film and since Channing Tatum has been cast as Gambit we'll be seeing him as well.

What other characters will we be seeing? Logan gives the names Scott, Jean and Storm to Xavier and producers have already said they'll be looking for actors to play the younger versions of them. In the original trilogy Jean was older than Scott so I wonder if they're going to keep that aspect.

The X-Force Factor

We know that Fox wants to make an X-Force film and what better way to introduce it than have the characters from X-Force appear in X-Men? To top it off, the character Cable who builds X-Force is very much associated with Apocalypse since he travels back in time to stop him any way necessary.

Cable has also been long paired up with fan favorite Deadpool who appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine but deviated wildly from his comicbook counterpart so it could be a great time for Fox to reintroduce that character properly. With a film cast already expanding I can see them leaving Deadpool out until an X-Factor film.

Apocalypse

Did you see the post-credit scene of X-Men: Days of Future Past but were confused by the grey guy with blue lips? That is Apocalypse and he’s the first mutant and incredibly powerful. His list of powers include everything under the sun, telekenesis, energy absorption, flight, impervious to damage and he’s immortal and incredibly intelligent.

Apocalypse also recruits mutants to serve as his four horsemen and in the comics, various mutants have taken one of the monikers of War, Pestilence, Famine and Death. Of all the characters that have appeared in the movies, Gambit, Angel and Wolverine have all been Death at one point or another. It’ll be interesting to see who ends up as a horseman.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is in theaters now!
