Trailer: Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

There are three types of Woody Allen movies: the serious ones, the funny serious ones, and the funny ones, which generally feature magic within the story.

The Oscar winning director’s latest movie, Magic in the Moonlight, as the title suggests, is firmly in the latter category.

Set in 1920s French Rivera, the comedy centres on Colin Firth as a professional magician who is sent to investigate supposed mystic Emma Stone, and essentially expose her as a fraud. Here’s the trailer:

And much like countless other Allen classics, such as Purple Rose of Cairo, Alice,?and Midnight in Paris, judging by the trailer, the movie is heavily influenced by the director’s fascination with the supernatural.

Despite recent controversy surrounding his private life, Allen’s career is in robust health, with his last film Blue Jasmine, featuring actress Cate Blanchett in Oscar winning form, garnering critical praise and grossing nearly $100 million from an $18 million budget.

Indeed, the cast for his latest film is no less impressive, considering Firth and Stone are two of the best comic actors around.

In fact, Allen was evidently impressed with Stone, as he has reportedly cast her in his next movie opposite Joaquin Phoenix, who is one of the best actors in the world right now. The still untitled project, which also has no plot or story details attached to it, is due to start filming this summer.

Magic in the Moonlight will be released on July 25th, 2014.
