Where to Start When Remodeling Your Home

Planning a remodel takes patience and sometimes perseverance, but it can also be a lot of fun. If you've been thinking about remodeling, you might have a picture in your mind of what you would like to do but aren't sure where to start. There's much more to it than just choosing paint colors and looking at new furniture. Here is a quick overview of the steps you'll take and a few tips to help you start your remodeling project.

Develop a Clear Goal and Timeline

Ask yourself why you want to remodel. If you're thinking of selling your property soon, maybe you want to make changes that will create more value. You can add square footage or update the kitchen with a good return on your investment. Add glass doors that open onto a patio. A beautiful backyard with an outdoor living space, such as a pergola or poolhouse, is highly sought after on the market. Perhaps, you want to create a space just for yourself; whatever your reason may be, keep your goal in mind to keep your perspective positive as you deal with the sights and sounds of a remodel.

Remember that remodels can run into obstacles along the way. Creating a timeline is certainly a productive way to stay on track, but you give yourself flexibility to account for delays. The more you can do to focus on the goal, the better.

Set a Budget

Setting a budget starts with homework. You'll need to do research to price the materials; this is a crucial part of the process. Never settle for the first quote you get. If you want to get the most out of your bottom line, create price comparison lists for everything. Writing everything down and running the numbers will give you a clear vision of how much you will need. You may not be able to get everything you want and stay within budget. In that case, this step will also help you decide what you can eliminate, at least for the moment. Think about the elements you could come back to and work on later.

Start Designing

Design is arguably the most exciting part of the remodel process. This is the part that you want to take in and enjoy the most. You get to be creative and customize your home to match your style and personality. With that in mind, it is also important not to let the fun take you astray. Design with your budget in mind. You know the cost of everything before you start, and you can use that to make wise choices and prioritize the things you must have. Hire an interior designer to help you create a blueprint of your vision.

Search for a Contractor

Hiring the right contractor can mean the difference between a quick and easy build and a nightmare. Take advantage of references and word of mouth; this will be a deciding factor in the process. Ask your friends and family for referrals. Vet your prospects online. You can look at their Yelp reviews and call all their references. Make sure they are licensed and provide the proper insurance for their crew. Avoid contractors that will not give you a quote quickly or ones that ask for all the money upfront before the work is completed. Once you've gone over your plans and your budget, ask for an estimated date of completion.

Begin Building

Once you've hired a contractor, get ready for the building process. Be sure to check for any permits that might be needed to get started. If your remodel entails any home additions, you might have a few steps to take with the city or your HOA first. Some contractors will take care of this for you; check with yours before getting started.

Everyone has heard horror stories about remodel roadblocks. However, if you make the proper preparations and stay involved every step of the way, you can keep things running smoothly. Remember to enjoy it.
