A Comfortable and Cozy Bedroom Space is Important: 6 Tips to Make Yours a Great Place to Sleep

Your bedroom is a private haven where you can retreat from the craziness of everyday life. It should also be a place where you can rest and recharge. After all, most adults should aim to get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. You can make your bedroom an oasis of dreaminess by following a few decorating tips to promote sound sleep.

1. Invest in Storage

Having clutter all over your bedroom — or anywhere in the house for that matter — can really mess with your sleep. In fact, it can mess with a lot more than that. Cluttered spaces are directly linked to lower levels of productivity and higher levels of stress and anxiety. So it is definitely worth your time to take a few steps to tame the stuff that has piled up around and under the bed.

Install closet organizers to help keep clothes neat and organized. As an added bonus, you'll have an easier time finding clothes before work in the morning. Instead of tossing dirty clothes into a pile in front of the closet, install a nice basket or hamper to keep them corralled. Shoe organizers that hang on the back of a door are another great idea that helps keep the floor clear.

2. Consider Furniture Size

It turns out size really does matter in the bedroom — at least where your furniture is concerned. While you want to have clean lines without a lot of clutter, you also want to fill up the space, too. If you have a small room, maximize closet space so you can get by with a nightstand and single dresser. Conversely, if the room is large, you want to choose a bed and dressers that dominate it. A double bed will look sadly lost in a king-sized bedroom, so choose a mattress size that works for your space. If the room is really big, use an upholstered chair and side table to create a cozy sitting area.

3. Remove Distractions

People do a lot more than sleeping in their bedrooms today. Unfortunately, that often means a push for productivity instead of peacefulness. Take steps to remove any distractions that interfere with your sleep. Televisions, phones and computers are major offenders in this respect. Some people remove all traces of tech to avoid the sleep-crushing blue light it emits. There is quite a bit of research indicating that this specific frequency of light can interfere with melatonin production which, in turn, disrupts natural sleep patterns.

4. Choose Soothing Colors

It turns out that people with blue bedrooms tend to report the best quality of sleep. Color psychology explains that the blues call nature scenes to mind, which promotes relaxation and calmness. Both of those are conducive to good sleep. If blue isn't for you, that' perfectly alright; it isn't the only color choice you have. Pale purple, sage green, white and creamy yellow all appear to be good colors for bedroom walls.

5. Turn Down the Lights

It isn't just blue light that disrupts sleep; any natural or artificial light source can make it harder to get good shuteye.  Use light filtering or room darkening window coverings to block out the sun or that annoying security lamp that is right outside your window. Use layered lighting so you can relax before bed with soft lamplight instead of the glare from a ceiling fixture. When you are ready to drift off, turn everything off and let the darkness settle around you. You might even want to go as far as covering mirrors or wearing a sleep mask.

6. Add Personal Touches

You don't want clutter in your sleeping area, but a few personal touches can make it feel more comfortable and inviting. Fresh or dried flowers that could irritate allergies should be avoided unless you are sure they won't be a problem. Some simple decorating ideas that work really well in a bedroom space include:

  • A favorite piece of artwork
  • Pictures of family, friends and pets
  • An aromatherapy diffuser with a relaxing scent
  • An arrangement of candles

You can plan your bedroom so that it promotes sleep. Look for soothing colors, personal touches and balanced furniture to create a visually appealing space.
