Summer in the City

By: Gabrielle Mizrahi

It is summer in the city!  Be sure to check out these four outdoor NYC exhibits and celebrate the arrival of summer.

1) Trek over the Brooklyn Bridge to see this work by acclaimed artist, Deborah Kass. Reading either “OY” or “YO” depending on what side of the river you view it, this work is a unique addition to a photo of the classic New York skyline.

On display through August 2016.

2) Once you are done deciding if you are more “YO” or “OY” in Brookyn, hop on a subway and head up to the Bronx to check out Boogie Down Booth, by Chat Travieso.  This green exhibit, equipped through solar power, celebrates local Bronx culture while simultaneously serving the community.  While you’re there, make sure you Boogie Down to the Bronx musicians the installation plays throughout the day.

On display through June 24, 2016.

3) On those days when you’re in a philosophical mood, take a stroll on the High Line and stop to ponder this work by Barbara Kruger.  Titled, Untitled (Blind Idealism is…), there has never been a more appropriate time to consider this type of work than the current election season.

On display until March 2017.

4) While summer is often synonymous with flowers, this new installation, Two Orchids, by Isa Genzken, takes summer flowers to a whole new level. A nod to the ubiquitousness of Orchids in society today, these twin stalks will greet visitors to Central Park for the upcoming season.
