Record Breaking Sale of El Greco's 'Santo Domingo Praying'

"Santo Domingo praying", painted by Domenikos Theotocopoulos, commonly known as "El Greco" achieved a record price for the artist when it was sold in London for 9.15 million pounds at a Sotheby's auction. A Sotheby's spokes person added that it was also the highest price ever paid for a piece of antique Spanish painting. "Santo Domingo praying" was completed in 1600 and is, according to Sotheby's, one of the painters best portraits of a saint seeing as it combines his imagination with his incredibly unique technique. "Christ on the Cross" another painting by "El Greco", which Sotheby's will be looking to sell for five million pounds, will also be going on auction on Thursday. It is based on a drawing by Miguel Angel and is larger in size. It belongs to "El Greco's" mature period, between 1600 and 1610.
