Pau
My entry is an "incised" wood carving, done on a piece of basswood prepared by burnishing with paper, and treating with Tung oil. A paper pattern is glued to the wood, and then carved through, using a knife with a short, sharp-tipped blade. Once the carving is finished, BriWax brand wood wax/polish (some with dye, to darken the incisions; some clear, to clean and polish the rest of the carving) is applied, and then wiped from the surface; the color stays in the incisions, but wipes off from the rest of the carving. Any color that contrasts with the wood can be used, I think.
This type of carving can be very painstaking to do, in trying to make incisions only where desired, and in the size desired. "Pau" (which, in Hawaiian, means "finished"), took several months, from July of one year until February of the next. It measures 3 13/16" wide by 5 13/16" tall by 3/4" thick. It is currently unframed.
