Effective Methods To Cure Artist Block

Every artist runs into those dreaded times of artist block. Nothing seems to go correctly, each idea you have turns out to be unoriginal, or you just don't have the patience and desire to keep at it. While this may seem like a major roadblock, it can actually be used as an opportunity to change your mindset and gain new insight into how you approach your work.

If you allow yourself the time to process what you're feeling and don't try to force anything, you may find that you come back to your projects with greater zeal and more inspiring ideas than ever before.

Stay Well Supplied

One of the more easily remedied types of artist block may stem from when you have the ideas, but lack the materials to bring them to fruition. No artist can anticipate everything they may need. You're constantly forming new creative goals and designs as your life experience and talents grow.

You can, however, keep yourself stocked in the basics. If you find that you frequently run out of something, keep a list handy to jot down a note to replenish it. It's much easy to stay in the flow of your vision when you don't need to stop to buy more paint.

Consider keeping a secured credit card for necessary purchases. It can even help you build your credit so you can make larger purchases or investments to advance your career in the future.

Experience A New Perspective

Sometimes you get too caught up in a project and can't see it clearly anymore. This is the perfect time to go out and socialize with your friends. Do something fun and completely unrelated to your artwork for a while to give your mind a rest.

You can also benefit from asking for constructive criticism from someone you trust. When you spend a lot of time focused on one project, you may start to overlook an obvious issue that is the source of your troubles. You can also watch videos of other artists for tips on technique and different approaches to a problem.

Take a Break

Switching up your day by going outside to take a walk and get a little fresh air is an amazingly effective way to snap out of artist block. It wakes up your brain, gets your blood pumping, and lets you clear your mind.

A little variety in your routine is good for you and may be just what you need to grasp onto any fleeting ideas that were out of your reach before.

Follow Your Intuition

Remember that art is meant to be fluid and subjective. Don't box yourself in by restricting yourself to a technique or medium that you think will work best. Try new things and experiment. Even if it doesn't work out for this project, you may get some fantastic ideas for your next one. If you are unfamiliar with a technique that you want to try, then take a class. Learning more will only improve your art.

Make Your Space Comfortable and Inspiring

The atmosphere of your workspace can have a profound impact on your mood and level of creativity. A sterile and boring room may begin to dull your spark and make it more difficult to come up with fresh new ideas. Surround yourself with bright and vibrant colors and visually stimulating objects. You never know just what could be the catalyst for an artistic breakthrough.

Many artists spend long days in their studios, so it's important that your space is comfortable. Organize your studio with a large desk or table where you can spread out your sketches. Don't forget a comfortable chair to prevent back pain. If you work on your feet a lot, some cushioned mats are a great idea to alleviate the pressure on your feet and keep you feeling good as you bring your ideas to life.

Artist block doesn't have to be a source of frustration if you approach it correctly. Consider it a signal that you need a time-out and let yourself walk away for a while. You can return to your work revitalized and ready to tackle any problems that previously seemed insurmountable.
