George RR Martin To Kill More Characters In Game of Thrones

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones and thought the death of Robb and Catelyn Stark was going to be the last time you would suffer having to watch your favorite character die then, to quote Tyrion “you’ve come to the wrong place”.

At an event at the Freemason's Hall in London, BuzzFeed is reporting [via Variety] that George RR Martin was asked if there were characters he could not kill because of their importance to the plot. While he didn’t name any names, he did reveal that it will become easier for him to kill far more characters in the final two books The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. Here’s what he said:

I have a large number of important characters who I switch between to tell the entirety of the story, and that limits who I can kill. Sometimes there's only one character who's my eye in a particular location, and if I kill that character everything going on in that particular subplot is going to be lost.

The way my books are structured, everyone was together, then they all went their separate ways and the story deltas out like that. And now it's getting to the point where the story is beginning to delta back in. The viewpoint characters are meeting up with each other and being in the same point at the same time which gives me a lot more flexibility for killing people.

Possible Game of Thornes spoilers ahead!

If you haven’t read the books, each chapter is structured around a point of view character. They are the windows into what is happening at a particular location. At this point in the books, characters are starting to meet other major characters that they haven’t met before as the story starts contracting.

The books have killed plenty of characters but very few were POV characters. I won’t tell you how many but it’s not a very high number. Now that the characters are coming back together it makes sense for Martin to drop some of those point of views and to also drop some of those POV characters.

The TV series, meanwhile, ploughs ahead at full speed and threatens to overtake the books next season– at least partially. We may get some of those deaths prematurely and that’s not to mention that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have a habit of killing off characters who are still alive in the books, changing some of the plotlines for the series. It’s even possible that some of those planned deaths in the books may not even happen in the series.

Yeah, I doubt that too.

Game of Thrones should return to HBO sometime in the spring of 2015.
