Matthew McConaughey In Talks For Stephen King's The Stand

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

Matthew McConaughey is the number one choice to lead The Stand -- although the studio and the director have different ideas on how to use the Oscar winner.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. want the True Detective actor to play antagonist Randall Flagg in the adaptation of Stephen King’s post-apocalyptic opus.

However, filmmaker Josh Boone is adamant that McConaughey should play hero Stu Redman, the protagonist who is immune from a plague which has devastated the Earth.

Following the success of Dallas Buyers Club -- which landed him an Academy Award for Best Actor -- and Nic Pizzolatto’s HBO detective drama, it is surprising that Warner’s do not want to put McConaughey in the more traditional leading man role.

The versatile actor’s next film is Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which will almost certainly be one of the biggest movies of the year, and will further solidify The Wolf of Wall Street star’s A-list credentials.

Fans of King’s book, which is widely considered to be one the American author’s best works, will simply be delighted that the project is finally getting the big screen treatment.

There have been a number of failed adaptations of the The Stand, which was released in 1978, most notably by Dawn of the Dead director George A. Romero in the 1980s.

Now thanks largely to advancements in technology, director Boone, who helmed The Fault In Our Starshas insisted that he will deliver “a single, R-rated movie that will be faithful to the book.”

Expect to hear more news on The Stand very soon.
