New Star Wars Rebels Short Released

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

I swore to myself after the disappointing Star Wars prequel trilogy that I would never again let the hype machine– especially if it was for Star Wars– get to me. Apparently I’m really bad at keeping that promise since I’ve already started dreaming about Star Wars: Episode VII in my sleep.

I’m not kidding, that’s an actual thing that happened a few nights ago.

We’re still about a year and a half away from the release of the next film and I’m getting very excited about it. Even the new series, Star Wars Rebels, is starting to draw me in pretty significantly. Last week’s Rebels short introduced us to Kanan and Hera and their relationship with each other and now Lucasfilm and Disney XD has released a new clip featuring Sabine, the Mandalorian warior. Check it out:

This new clip introduces us a bit more to Sabine, who is the Ghost’s resident explosives and art expert. The character doesn’t seem that developed and like many of the other characters appearing in Rebels seems to fill in an archetype. That’s not a criticism, since Star Wars has always been comfortable starting off with archetypes before giving them depth later on.

Again, the designs are very much in line with the original trilogy and if the released concept images and prop pictures are indication, Episode VII will also fall in line with the aesthetics. There’s already rumblings and rumors that Rebels will actually set up some elements of Episode VII– although I have my doubts.

While Star Wars Rebels seems to be more lighthearted than The Clone Wars, this shouldn’t dissuade you from watching it. Clone Wars also started off lighthearted before delving into some darker areas of the Star Wars universe. Since the creative team behind Clone Wars is also behind Rebels, you should expect the series to get more complex and, with any luck, we’ll also see some familiar faces from the original trilogy show up other than the usual C-3PO and R2-D2.

Star Wars Rebels will premiere in October 3, 2014, and is part of the new era in the Star Wars universe, after Disney bought Lucasfilm nearly two years ago.
