Terry Gilliam May Start Shooting Don Quixote Movie In December

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

Terry Gilliam’s reputation as Hollywood’s ‘Captain Chaos’ has been built up over 30 years of filmmaking. However, the cinematic calamity which solidified his mercurial reputation was his failed attempt to film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

Now after 15 years of scraping for finances – and seeing his mainstream career take a huge knock with the messy productions of The Brothers Grimm and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus?- Gilliam has confirmed to The Wrap that he will finally shoot the movie after Christmas.

But The Twelve Monkeys director revealed that the movie will be different from the Johnny Depp incarnation, and will instead satirize that failed project.

He said: “I keep incorporating my own life into it and shifting it. The basic underlying premise of that the version Johnny was involved in, was that he actually was going to be transported back to the 17th century, and now it all takes place now, it’s contemporary. It’s more about how movies can damage people."

The doomed 1999 version (pretty much everything went wrong), which was documented in the film Lost in La Mancha, starred Depp as Toby Grisoni, with veteran actor Jean Rochefort as Quixote himself.

And the Monty Python member is still wary of the dangers associated with adapting the subject matter to the screen.

He said: "Our main character actually made a Don Quixote movie a lot earlier in his history, and the effect it had on many people wasn’t very nice. Some people go mad, some people turn to drink, some people become whores."

He added: "I’ve done it so many times or not done it so many times I’ll believe it when I see it. However, I’m behaving as if it’s all going to happen as planned."

Gilliam returned to filmmaking after a 4 year gap with The Zero Theorem (read my review here), which starred Christopher Waltz, and has unfortunately been distributed poorly, and will be given a limited U.S. release in September.
