Alex Kurtzman To Direct The Mummy Reboot

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

Alex Kurtzman will direct Universal’s The Mummy reboot, casting more doubt over his future at rival Sony, as part of the Spider-Man ‘brain trust.’

The filmmaker, who helped develop the expanding Amazing Spider-Man franchise at Sony, had previously been slated to direct Spidey spin-off Venom.

However, following his producing partner Roberto Orci’s departure to Paramount to develop and direct Star Trek 3, Kurtzman is now officially on board to develop and produce Universal’s hugely ambitious monsters tentpole, in a shared universe.

The franchise will include classic characters such as Dracula, The Mummy, Frankenstein, and The Wolfman.

According to Deadline, The Mummy reboot will be set in the present day and will include a new central character -- although it will largely follow the same family-friendly style of the previous incarnation, which starred Brendan Fraser.

Universal’s co-president of production Jeff Kirschenbaum confirmed that Kurtzman, who is producing the film alongside writer Chris Morgan (The Fast & Furious franchise), has the vision and the talent to make the project successful.

He said: "Over the course of developingThe Mummy, Alex has demonstrated such clarity and passion about this character and mythology.

"He knows why The Mummy has fascinated us for so long and how to bring that into an inventive, incredible new adventure. It became obvious that he is the perfect choice to be not only one of the narrative engineers of this new vision but its director as well."

The Mummy reboot will hit screens on April 22nd 2016.
