Avengers & Guardians of the Galaxy Crossover in the Works

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

Guardians of the Galaxy has just opened, and I highly recommend you go see it, and we’ve already got confirmation that it’ll have a sequel. Since it’s in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you have to wonder if the Avengers will meet the Guardians.

Up to this point, every Marvel Studios character met up in the first Avengers, but with three new properties (Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and Doctor Strange) in the works it’ll be very difficult to put them all in one movie. That’s not to mention the introduction of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Instead of piling all the characters into Avengers 3, we could get a crossover film instead. Director James Gunn spoke about it to Yahoo UK saying the following:

We talked about all sorts of possibilities [for a crossover] and I kind of know what the basic plan is. That could or could not include a couple of Avengers and a couple of Guardians meeting up, or all of the Avengers and all of the Guardians. But, we do inhabit the same universe and they're pretty big personalities that are likely to, at some point or another, run into each other.

–James Gunn

Vin Diesel?and Chris Pratt also weighed in on it:

I think there's going to be huge fans of the Guardians and there are huge fans of the Avengers and I think the discussion has already been had. I think the audience may demand something like that.

–Vin Diesel

If you go from five characters and you add another five characters, that's ten characters. That can be very difficult. That being said, Marvel knows their stuff. Knows there business. And I see this, rather than taking the worlds that already exist and putting them together, this opens up doors into brand new worlds. We take characters we didn't even know existed in the four corners of the universe and we see their stories.

–Chris Pratt

Honestly, Pratt has a very good point, and it’s something I’ve been wondering about. Avengers: Age of Ultron has upward of 10 heroes in the film already (including Vision). Add another five in the form Guardians not to mention Ant-Man and Doctor Strange. That’s quite a few superheroes for one movie, so the best way would be not to have Guardians in Avengers 3, but to cross them over in a separate film.

The bonus to this is that we know once Avengers 3 is done, both Robert Downey Jr.’s and Chris Evans’ contracts are done, so we could get a movie where it will only be a few of the Avengers, and some, if not all of the Guardians, while delaying the last outing with RDJ and Evans. Of course, Marvel could (and likely will) re-sign the two actors for more Iron Man and Captain America movies.

Before any of that happens, we still have Guardians of the Galaxy opening today, and Avengers: Age of Ultron premiering May 1st, 2015.
