Guardians of the Galaxy Director Speaks About the Sequel

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

Guardians of the Galaxy is set to burn up the box office when it's released later this week and Marvel seems so confident of the film that the sequel has already been given the green light. The announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con during the Marvel panel in Hall H, but we still haven't really heard what the sequel might be about.

Director James Gunn recently spoke to the Wall Street Journal about the sequel. While he didn't give any details about the plot of the second film, he does at least have an idea that Marvel seems to be onboard with. Here's what he said to to WSJ:

I have a good idea. Frankly, it's more important that the story works by itself than by how it fits into 'The Avengers.’ First and foremost, I'm concerned with the Marvel cosmic side of things and these characters.

With a July 28, 2017 release date set for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Gunn has more time to put into the film. He spent two years non-stop on the current film, and he'll need a well-deserved break before diving back into the next film:

Frankly, I just want to put my all into the next movie. Also, I need to take a little time off.

The best Marvel films have always worked as a self-contained story first, with threads that tied into the larger ongoing mythology known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This seems to be a lesson they learned with Iron Man 2, and one that DC Comics hasn’t learned yet with its upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Going from a comic book title the average movie goer has never heard of, to one of the most anticipated movie of the summer is a neat trick that Marvel has somehow pulled off.?For a while, there were rumors that Guardians would be a one-off with no sequel, except maybe spinoffs, until we heard from Disney chief Bob Iger back in May who suggested that he saw strong franchise potential in the film. While a studio head saying something like that to investors should be expected, the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 has been locked into a date shows Disney and Marvel mean business when it comes to the galaxy-spanning sequel.

When Guardians of the Galaxy was first announced, it was considered a huge gamble on Marvel and Disney's part, but now seems to be on track to be another huge payoff for them. While the film being a hit is all but assured, the question remains how big of a hit will it be. It also brings up that Marvel is willing to experiment and get out of its comfort zone and tackle more interesting ideas than just regular superheroes. And remember, there was some trepidation with the first Thor, since Marvel hadn’t tackled mythology quite yet, and it worked out great.

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters this August 1st, 2014.
