Roberto Orci Joins Lionsgate's Power Rangers The Movie

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a Pandora’s box which Hollywood should never open.

Of course, considering life is an endless chain of suffering and injustice, Lionsgate has done just that, and employed Roberto Orci, and his newly formed Sneaky Shark company, as executive producer.

For anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure of watching the Power Rangers, which started in 1993, it’s a repetitive and irritating kids show which makes the Teletubbies look like a Danish crime drama centering around the shady world of professional chess.

While most children grow out of watching such brainless fodder after a year, the creators cleverly repackage the show annually, ensuring new adolescents are unwittingly hooked, while a hardcore minority continue to watch as a direct result of an addiction to kindergarden party drug ritalin.

Writer, prodcuer, and soon-to-be director (of Star Trek 3) Orci is something of renaissance man when it comes to mindless special effects driven nonsense. The filmmaker has spent the last decade co-writing films such as The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Star Trek, Star Trek: Into DarknessThe first two Transformers films, and Mission: Impossible III, while constantly denying that he has sold his soul to the devil. Since Orci leftThe Amazing Spider-Man 3, he certainly has time to work on this film and Star Trek 3.

In fairness, the report suggest that the big budget re-imaging of the show will be a little more ambitious than its small screen counterpart, which is about as imaginative as a chocolate teapot. The film will center on a group of high school kids who acquire powers and, well, you can probably figure out the rest.

As yet, there is no director attached to the project, although series creator Haim Saban will act as producer, alongside partner Brian Casentini and Lionsgate President of Production Allison Shearmur.
