Godzilla Sequel in the Works!

I feel like I’ve been talking about Godzilla since the very first trailer hit the net last December — and I have. Of all the films that have been or will be released this year, it was the one I was looking forward to the most and it met my expectations.

Director Gareth Edwards crafted a Godzilla movie that brought the kaiju back to his roots, while at the same time incorporating some of the best elements of the franchise’s B-Movie sequels. Now it looks like Legendary will be asking him to come back for a second round!

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are already developing a sequel to the massive hit. Godzilla grossed $93.2 million domestically and $103 million internationally so Legendary’s gamble on the $160 million film has really paid off.

It seems really interesting that Legendary is the studio behind the two biggest giant monster films of the last couple years. Pacific Rim and Godzilla share much in common, but took very different approaches giant monsters running amuck — they’re almost polar opposites on how to do a giant monster movie.

So what will the sequel be about? We probably won’t really know for a few years, they did keep the story for this film under wraps until just a few months before release. That hasn’t stopped Edwards from detailing, at least structurally, what he would do with the sequel. He said he’d use the same anticipation model that Spielberg perfected in films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Jaws, where you hear about the monster in the first half of the film, and doesn’t reveal itself until the second half.

What could that mean for the King of Monsters? Spoilers for Godzilla 2014 and my own baseless speculation to follow!

The last we see of Godzilla, he’s returning to the ocean victorious, but battered and beaten. Human beings watch in awe as he returns to the se,a but what if that fight took a lot out of him? What if by the next film Godzilla is in too weak a state to fight whatever comes next?

In the current film, we got a Godzilla who was ready to hunt, but the next one he may be more reluctant. That would give our human characters more to do to coax him into action, and to maybe even develop a mutual understanding. Thematically that would tie into a good extension of the first film as spoken by Ken Watanabe’s character “the arrogance of man is thinking nature is in our control and not the other way around”. We’re better off working with Godzilla than against him.

Godzilla is in theaters now, and stay tuned for more sequel news!
