Seasonal Crafts at the Craft and Folk Art Museum

LOS ANGELES, CA -- The Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles is at the forefront of Crafts in Los Angeles, and is a beehive of activity during the holiday season. The museum has regular exhibitions as well as regular workshops and crafts evenings. Current exhibitions include an exhibition of glass sculpture by Stephen Klein as part of the celebrations for the Studio Glass movement’s 50th anniversary. He will also be leading a collage workshop on the December 9, 2012 at the museum where he will also talk about how he uses layers of colors in his glassworks. The Skin and Ink exhibition which is also showing pays tribute to the role of Los Angeles in the tattoo renaissance and explores the journey of tattoo art and its acceptance as an art form. A poetry tattoo workshop will take place on the December 16, 2012led by poet Brendan Constantine. The cost is $30 and participants should bring pen and paper with them.

To get everyone in the holiday mood Samantha Squalls will lead the Etsy Craft evening at the Museum on the December 6, 2012. Samantha is a scrapbook diva and is passionate about creating hand made greeting cards that can be turned into keep sake cards. She also has her own hand made greetings card and invitation company. Samantha has said that the Etsy Craft evening will be full of holiday love and creativity! During the evening, participants can create handmade greeting cards (as seen in photo 1). There will also be the opportunity to work with recyclable magazine bows, to create beautiful handmade holiday bows (as seen in photo 2) and also to create unique gift wrapping paper (as seen in photo 3).The workshop is free for CFAM members, and $7 for non members. It includes materials and drinks with snacks in the CFAM courtyard.

The next Etsy Craft night will take place on the January 3, 2013 and will be lead by Mark Montano. Participants will be able to design a range of accessories using tribal art motives and unexpected materials as inspiration.

The Museum’s monthly knitting collectives are a great success and take place on the third Saturday of the month. The next meeting of Yarn Bombing Los Angeles Collective knitting group will take place on the December 15, 2012. Local knitters or those on holiday in LA are invited to attend and share knitting projects (as seen in photo 4) as well as good conversation! All skill levels are welcome. On the January 19, 2013 those who are passionate about knitting are invited to take part in one of the Yarn Bombing collectives knitting projects which consists of covering the Craft and Folk Art Museum in granny squares.

The Craft and Folk Art Museum shop stocks a wide range of hand made objects by local artists and crafts people.  If any of you reading this are in the area, the Museum shop will be open on the 24th of December for the purchase of last minute holiday gifts!
