NYCC: Cast Of Firefly Still Willing To Do Second Season

If ever there was a TV show that deserves a second chance, it’s Joss Whedon’s short-lived series Firefly. The show had a second chance in theaters with the film Serenity from Universal Pictures but as of right now, nothing else outside of the comic book series is in the works.
When the show premiered, Fox Television didn’t understand it and gave it the Friday night death-slot. While Universal optioned the film rights, a resurrection of the show would still need to come from Fox, or another network would need to buy the rights.
Even if that were to happen, would the original cast want to come back? Stars Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, and Jewel Staite, who were on hand at the New York Comic Con this past weekend, answered a resounding yes without hesitation.
“Full-time, please,” Fillion said. “Otherwise they would cast new people,” Staite added, while Torres said, “And nobody wants that,” to a huge round of applause.
While the show is loved by many fans (who call themselves 'Browncoats'), it hasn’t propelled any of the actors to superstardom, but it has helped a little bit. Staite said the show helped her get cool jobs such as Stargate Atlantis while Fillion and Torres don’t think it impacted their careers very much. “I don’t think people look at your resume and say, ‘Look! He was on a failed television show, but it's cultish'," said Fillion.
One of the best moments came when a fan asked Fillion if his character Mal Reynolds and Han Solo walked into a bar, who would walk out. "Everyone else,” he quipped to thunderous cheers and the approval of his cast mates.
At this point I would be surprised by any revival of the show, but I could have said the same thing about The X-Files a year ago. Whedon has built up a lot of clout with Marvel’s Avengers film series so maybe a second season isn’t out of the question. Personally, I would love it if Netflix got their hands on the show to produce a new season. It wouldn’t be the first time the streaming service would have brought a Fox show back from the dead.
