George Miller Turned Down Akira, Christopher Nolan Attached

George Miller has revealed he was approached to direct the live-action version of anime classic Akira.

The director, who recently enjoyed tremendous success with Mad Max: Fury Road, has a long standing relationship with studio Warner Bros. who is developing the science fiction remake.

And Miller confirmed that while the studio talked to him about the project, his busy schedule means he turned the opportunity down.

He said (via Yahoo): "There was talk of it. But I’ve got so many things on my dance card, I don’t have the time to do everything."

The original animated film, released in 1988, is set in a dystopian future Tokyo and centres on a teenage biker gang leader who has psychic powers.

The live-action American remake has been in development for over a decade and is currently being written by Marco J. Ramirez (Sons Of Anarchy) and co-produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's company Appian Way.

There is a rumor that Christopher Nolan may have been approached about the picture, as we reported last month. And for good reason, The Dark Knight director also has a strong relationship with Warners ,and the studio recently revealed that his next film will be released in 2017, and not much is known about it outside of the release date.

Den of Geek has reported that Nolan has certainly discussed the project and his previous work with DiCaprio on Inception adds further credence to the story. The report also suggested that the film would be part of a trilogy.

If the Memento filmmaker was given the reigns of Akira then it would have fan boys around the world drooling on their keyboards. The geek anticipation would almost be too much to bare and could potentially lead to rioting on online forums.

It seems like this incredibly exciting project could finally be coming to fruition – fingers crossed the eventual movie does the amazing subject matter justice.
