Apple Photos to Have Pro Level Options

When news came that Apple was retiring development of Aperture, their advanced user photo software, professional users weren’t happy in the least. And since they were also dumping iPhoto and merging both into the new Apple Photos app, they were even more unhappy faced with having to use an app that would cater mostly to consumer grade applications. But now we’re hearing that Apple plans to give professionals and advanced users pro-level options that should sooth their ire.
“With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library, enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture. When Photos for OS X ships next year, users will be able to migrate their existing Aperture libraries to Photos for OS X." – Apple Statement on the end of Aperture development
The word comes down from AppleInsider, which reports that Cupertino has planned all along to keep both consumer and professional users happy, if not separated, but offering professional level features and plugins that will provide for a more prosumer like application. These features, which will be released with Photos in the fall as part of OS X Yosemite, will offer Aperture like capability including image search, editing, effects, and third-party plugin support. Photos advanced photo imaging will include greater control over adjustments like color saturation, contrast, and temperature, as well as the ability for photo masking, cloning, and other features that a pro Photoshop or Lightroom user wouldn’t lose sleep over.
Apple also dispelled the rumor that it would offer support for dissatisfied users who would choose to move over to Adobe Lightroom. Rather, Apple is going to leave users on their own and Adobe will provide any support that users would need to make the transition.
“If you are an Aperture or iPhoto customer looking for change,” Adobe said in a statement last week, “check out our new Creative Cloud Photography plan announced last week, or our standalone Lightroom app for your desktop as alternatives. “We are committed to helping interested iPhoto and Aperture customers migrate to our rich solution across desktop, device and web workflows.”
The real takeaway, though, is that Apple is going to allow third-party plugin development once Photos is launched in 2015. And it makes me wonder if there’s method to the madness. Apple could make plugin support an in-app purchase, and give developers a revenue stream that they could profit from to the tune of a 1/3 of the purchase price. I’m not sayin’ that’s going to happen, but it can certainly see the potential there.
