Moms and Children Write Together, Read Together: Books for Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is fast approaching. Flowers and candy make nice gifts but can only be enjoyed for a limited time. This Mother’s Day, give a gift mothers and children can enjoy together over and over again. Give a book (or two or three). There are a number of books written by mother and child authors for readers of all ages and interests.

For Moms With Adult Children

For memoir lovers, consider Travelling With Pomegranates: A Mother-Daughter Story (as seen in photo 1). Written by Sue Monk, author of Secret Life of Bees and The Mermaid Chair, and her daughter Ann Kidd, Pomegranates shares their travels together through Greece and France.

Lisa Scottoline, author of Look Again and Don’t Go, and her daughter Francesca Serritella also have a memoir together. Best Friends, Occasional Enemies: The Lighter Side of Life as a Mother and Daughter (as seen in photo 2) tells the intimate details of their relationship.

Authors Caroline and Charles Todd are a mother/son duo that writes under the pen name Charles Todd. They write historical fiction and are best known for their Inspector Ian Rutledge series (as seen in photo 3).

For Moms With Tween and Teen Children

Life & Style Weekly’s founding editor in chief Sheryl Berk collaborates with her ten-year-old daughter, Carrie Berk on their series The Cupcake Club (as seen in photo 4), a great addition for the mother/child bakers in the family.

For fantasy lovers, P.C. Cast, author of the Divine series, teams up with daughter Kristin Cast in their vampyre series House of Night (as seen in photo 5).

For mothers with teen daughters, Between the Lines (as seen in photo 6) makes a good choice. This illustrated, modern-day fairy tale is co-written by Jodi Picoult, author of My Sister’s Keeper and The Tenth Circle, and her sixteen-year-old daughter Samantha Van Leer.

Mothers and sons will enjoy the funny and thrilling B.U.G. (Big Ugly Guy) (as seen in photo 7), written by Jane Yolen, author of Owl Moon and Devil’s Arithmetic, and her son Adam Stemple. Jane has also written a number of books with her daughter, Heidi Stemple, including Bad Girls (as seen in photo 8), a story about history’s most famous female outlaws.

For Moms With Young Children

Fans of “Mary Poppins” and “The Sound of Music” will appreciate the multitude of children’s books that Julie Andrews has written with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton. The Very Fairy Princess books are just right for the princesses of the family, and Thanks To You: Wisdom from Mother and Child also makes a great Mother’s Day gift (as seen in photos 9 and 10).

Dog and cat lovers will spend hours reading and re-reading Bittle, illustrated by Dan Yaccarino, and Cat Talk, illustrated by Barry Moser (as seen in photos 11 and 12). Both of these beautiful picture books are written by Patricia McLaughlin, author of Sarah, Plain and Tall, and her daughter Emily McLaughlin.

For mothers and children who love Aesop’s Fables, be sure to read the Who’s Got Game? books (as seen in photo 13). Illustrated by Pascal Lemaitre, the series is written by Toni Morrison, author of Song of Solomon and Beloved, and her son Slade Morrison. Toni and Slade also co-wrote Little Cloud and Lady Wind, illustrated by Sean Qualls, which is a wonderful picture book about courage and freedom (as seen in photo 14).

Reading books together is a great way for mothers and their children to bond. Make this Mother’s Day special by giving the gift of books to the special mom in your life.
