Huntington, NY Leroy and Loretta Lockhorn and the aptly named St. Bernard, Howard Huge, have entertained readers for decades.  The bickering long-married Lockhorns and the affable oversized pet are the comic strip stars in a new exhibition at The Heckscher Museum of Art honoring the work of Long Island comic creators Bill and Bunny Hoest. The Lockhorns meet Howard Huge: Comic Cartoons by Bill & Bunny Hoest is on view October 6 to November 5, 2017.

The LockhornsBill Hoest, one of the most prolific and successful cartoonists in the country, created The Lockhorns in 1968 and, with Bunny, Howard Huge in 1980.  Bunny Hoest, known as the “Cartoon Lady,” for her popular body of work, has continued to tell funny stories since Bill passed away almost 30 years ago.  King Feature Syndicate, a unit of the Hearst Corporation, distributes The Lockhorns.

Each week, Leroy and Loretta Lockhorn enter the homes of more than 100 million people around the world. The comic strip is translated daily into 12 languages and appears in more than 500 newspapers worldwide. Howard Huge was a Parade Magazine staple and the subject of several books featuring collections of the comic panels.  Written by Ms. Hoest and now illustrated by John Reiner, The Lockhorns still resonates with people all over the world.  The exhibition includes 60 original cartoons that will delight visitors.

“The comment I get all the time [about The Lockhorns] is that ‘you must have been hiding in my closet, or looking in my window,’ which lets me know I'm right on the mark,” Bunny said.  “I’m writing what I see. It’s based on observation. The only personal part is the cooking.  Like Loretta, I’m a terrible cook.”

The Hoests’ work includes Bumper SnickersAgatha CrummLaugh ParadeWhat A Guy!, -+and Hunny Bunny's Short Tales. This year, The Heckscher Museum of Art is recognizing Bunny Hoest and the memory of Bill Hoest at its Celebrate Achievement Benefit honoring the cartoonists for their contributions to the arts and culture on Long Island, and beyond.
